Week 10/11 - Decide & Do

I’m back! This past week has been refreshing to disconnect from social media and just plug away at work and relax at home. After the Berkeley County proposal, (which we still haven’t heard back from) I decided to unwind a bit and reflect for a little over a week. Proposal preparations take weeks and although you may not physically be at work during nights and weekends, your brain is dedicated to estimating that project accurately all day long up until the minute the package is submitted. The project was 184 design pages with an 850-page specification book. It’s nearly impossible to capture all the requirements in 2 weeks, but I sure as hell tried!
During my down time, I started listening to motivational podcasts and interviews with successful entrepreneurs. I also listen to Amazon’s Audible app - it comes with Prime membership in the App or Google Play store. It’s almost like Amazon’s version of TED Talks. Anyway, I spend about 2-3 hours each day in my truck going to job sites or traveling back and forth from home and an additional hour in the gym, so I figured this time can be spent listening to other business owners and see how they’re developing their skills.
I’ve been narrowing down my listening topics to shared characteristics of successful people. Not even successful people, but the actions regular individuals take every day that make them successful. Most people want to hear, “if you do X, Y, and Z” - Voila! You’re successful! Every person (in this country at least) has a free decision to make every single day. Those decisions can lead to a common goal - either someone they want to be or where/what they want to be living or doing. A lot of people don’t reach this alternate reality they create in their mind because they don’t ACT on these decisions. The actions you take on something you want to do either makes you successful or unsuccessful.
Most people don’t act on these decisions because they don’t think their smart enough, they don’t think they have the resources, the time, or worst of all - they’re afraid of what other people will think. They’re afraid that when they fail trying to step out of their own comfort zone, someone is going to say “hey, I told you so - I told you that you shouldn’t have done that.”
The thing is - that those people that want to point fingers and wait for you to fail - they’re more afraid of you. They’re more afraid to step out of their own comfort zone and take this huge risk/this big jump of the unknown to try and make a successful action out of that decision. You only need to do this ONCE - whether you succeed or fail at that one opportunity - it’s almost a snowball effect. The first thing I decided to do was join the military - I knew nothing about the service, nobody in my family served in the military and I knew that I would be 100% committed to that. It took a lot of time - I succeeded multiple times in the service and I failed multiple times, but I made it happen. The snowball effect of being part of something greater than yourself continues in my life. That effect is attributed to the rest of the decisions that you act on in the rest of your life.
Now I’m starting a business. Again, I have no idea how to do it, or where to even begin but I saw an opportunity to create something bigger than myself and I’m jumping on it. Now it’s to the point where there are things that I decide what I want to do with my life, I decide what I want to do, and I act on those decisions. Without having all the answers, or really none of the answers except for some risk - I act on it. You’re never going to have all the right answers and you’re certainly never going to have all the answers to your doubts or questions before you get started. But, what you will have is your commitment - your 100% commitment to your craft or idea. Making that happen is what will make you successful.
That’s the shared characteristic of successful people - commitment.
The reason I bring this up is because my wife said something to me the other day that I wanted to dive into. “When you do something, you do it to the extreme - you don’t half-ass anything.” When I decide I want to do something whether it’s this second or planning for the future - I know it’s going to happen. I might not know how I’m going to get to that end-goal right away, but I know that I’m going to stay laser-focused on that goal until it’s accomplished.
This is very evident when I play sports (almost to a fault). When I join a sports team or league, I show up to all the practices, events, and games no matter what. It’s that feeling of being something bigger than yourself that drives me to those decisions.
Anyway, I just wanted to write a little motivational post about successful characteristics.

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm building my portfolio for potential real estate opportunities. The market in the Charleston area is booming and I would like to help any realtors in the vicinity show the complete package of their listing home, land or special features.
